How is Mesothelioma Diagnosed?

For mesothelioma, people who have a history of asbestos exposure may be recommended to undergo regular imaging tests like Chest X-rays and Computed Tomography (CT) Scans. However, it is not yet clear how well these tests work for early detection. Blood tests also look for elevated levels of fibulin-3 and soluble mesothelioma-related peptides (SMRPs), but these tests are still undergoing further research.

Mesothelioma is a rare type of cancer, and like all rare cancers, there isn’t a standard screening process for early detection, unlike cancers like breast, ovarian, and prostate cancer. The key to finding mesothelioma early is determining if someone has been exposed to asbestos in the past.

Mesothelioma has a long latency period of 10 years to 50 years, which means that symptoms do not develop until much later. Therefore, regular monitoring is the prudent move for people who have a history of exposure, such as those with at-risk occupations.

Mesothelioma Symptoms

There are no clear cut signs for mesothelioma. Many of the symptoms are the same as those found in other cancers, or even non-cancer-related diseases, such as fever, fatigue, unexplained weight loss, and excessive sweating.

However the following signs have been found in affected patients:

Pleural Mesothelioma

  • Chest pain
  • Lower back pain
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Coughing
  • Facial swelling
  • Throat pain

Peritoneal Mesothelioma

  • Abdominal swelling and pain
  • Constipation
  • Vomiting and Nausea

Pericardial Mesothelioma

  • Heart murmurs and irregular heartbeat
  • Chest pain
  • Shortness of breath

If you or a loved one have experienced any of these, it is important to seek immediate medical attention. It is crucial to mention if there has been any history of asbestos exposure, so that doctors can run the appropriate tests to confirm whether mesothelioma may have begun to develop, and continue monitoring the patient.
