The American Cancer Society estimates that about 500-600 cases of Wilms tumors are found every year. It is a rare cancer, but it is the most common type of kidney cancer in children. It makes up only 5% of all childhood cancers in the US. The average age for diagnosis of Wilms Tumors is 3-4 years old. Wilms tumors are more likely to be found in girls but are more common in African American children compared to other ethnicities. The reasons for this aren’t clear yet.
