YouTube beauty influencer and mother Jessica Pettway passed away from cervical cancer on March 11, 2024. She was 36 years old at the time.
Jessica remained strong throughout her cancer journey. She was able to find strength in her vulnerability, serving as an inspiration for those who follow her to this day.
In an Instagram post made on August 1, 2023, Jessica Pettway recalls her journey and shares her struggles in public.
Here’s a breakdown of what happened:
June 2022 – She experienced intense vaginal bleeding and felt extremely fatigued. She consulted other women if they’ve had similar experiences. After several confirmations, Jessica thought that it’s a natural thing women go through. July 1, 2022 – Jessica was found unconscious in their bathroom at around 4 AM. Her husband rushed her to the hospital. She was dismissed the next day and was told she had fibroids. Her healthcare provider painted her condition to be fairly common. July 22, 2022 – She was once again rushed to the hospital after again passing out. Her healthcare provider approached her case casually – again believing that Jessica only had fibroids. Her bleeding eventually stopped soon after, but labor-like pains replaced them. Jessica could no longer function as her usual self at this point. December 31. 2022 – The bleeding came back, and worse than before. January 7 to 14, 2023 – She was hospitalized for a week due to severe blood loss. She received 10 blood transfusions throughout this duration. Her healthcare provider finally recommended that she get a biopsy done. 1st Week of February, 2023 – Jessica met with another gynecologist. This doctor was the first to show real concern about her situation. The gynecologist pointed out a huge mass and referred Jessica to an oncologist. February 8, 2023 – She met with an oncologist and was diagnosed with Stage 3 Cervical Cancer. |
In such cases, we can see how medical negligence leads to severe consequences. Had Jessica’s condition been diagnosed properly from the beginning, she would have stood a better chance against cancer.
Late Cancer Diagnosis?
Reach out to know your legal options
In a span of 7 months, she was constantly provided with subpar medical attention. This allowed her cancer to progress, and only getting medical treatments by the time the disease was harder to combat.
While Jessica’s spirit bounced back towards the end of her journey, she noted how difficult it was for her to watch her family grieve. Medical malpractice is an offense that affects not only patients but entire families.
Families who are suffering or have lost a member due to a late cancer diagnosis are eligible for legal compensation. Make sure that you work with specialized and dedicated lawyers to achieve favorable results.
