A dump truck driver was found dead at the scene, while a 10-year old boy had to be airlifted to a medical facility after a dump truck crashed into a Sandford home, 30 minutes east of Binghamton, on September 9, 2024.
State Police reports indicate that a dump truck crashed into a one-storey home on Old Plank Road, where authorities found the 29-year old male driver dead on the scene. A ten-year-old boy, one of the three residents, was airlifted into Albany Medical Center, while the 40-year old woman was treated at the scene. The other resident, a 22-year old male, did not sustain any injuries.
It is still unclear what caused the crash, as authorities are still investigating the incident, and as of now, have not released further details. The names of the deceased driver and the residents have also not yet been released.
According to a report by Forbes, fatal truck accidents in America happen mostly in rural areas, with up to 55% compared to urban areas at 45%. Factors tied to this are the darkness of country roads which increase driver fatigue, and the reduced amount of congestion which makes drivers more likely to speed. And while most recorded truck accidents are not fatal and largely involve only property damage, when they do happen, the injuries can be severe.
