A multi-vehicle collision involving six cars created significant traffic delays on I-690's eastbound lanes near Teall Avenue (Exit 14) in Syracuse late Wednesday, January 22, 2025. Police spokesperson Kieran Coffey reported the incident occurred around 11:40 p.m. Fortunately, the accident resulted in no major injuries.
Ongoing construction on I-690, started on August 12, 2024 and expected to continue through the spring of 2025, has resulted in reduction of driveable area to two lanes from the junction of I-81 Southbound, to Teall Avenue. This may be one of the factors for increased risk of traffic incidents. Notable recent accidents in the area also involve a multi-car crash in September last year, following a Pitbull concert, and a traffic backup caused by a two-car accident in the same month. In April of 2024, four people were hospitalized after a crash on I-690 westbound near Thompson road, where a pedestrian was struck by a car.

What are Multi-car Pile Ups?
Multiple vehicle pile-ups are traffic accidents involving three or more vehicles in a chain reaction of collisions. These incidents typically occur when an initial collision causes subsequent vehicles to crash into the accident scene. Common causes include adverse weather conditions, poor visibility, distracted driving, sudden braking, and road construction zones. Victims of multi-car pile-ups may suffer various injuries, from minor cuts and whiplash to severe trauma including spinal cord injuries, traumatic brain injuries, broken bones, and in worst cases, fatalities.
According to the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles, multiple vehicle crashes accounted for approximately 28% of all traffic accidents in New York State in 2023, with over 15,000 such incidents reported. In Syracuse alone, multiple vehicle collisions represented 22% of all traffic accidents during the same period.
The Serious Injury Threshold
Under New York Insurance Law § 5102(d), the "serious injury threshold" is a legal standard that determines whether an injured party can pursue a lawsuit for damages beyond what's covered by no-fault insurance. To qualify as a serious injury in New York, the condition must fall into one of these categories:
- Death
- Dismemberment
- Significant disfigurement
- Fracture
- Loss of a fetus
- Permanent loss of use of a body organ, member, function, or system
- Permanent consequential limitation of use of a body organ or member
- Significant limitation of use of a body function or system
- Medically determined injury or impairment that prevents the injured person from performing substantially all of their usual and customary daily activities for not less than 90 days during the 180 days immediately following the injury
