Ovarian Cancer Screening Protocols

Ovarian cancer is the 7th most common cancer in women around the world. However, unlike breast and cervical cancers, there is currently no routine screening process in place for detecting the disease that is often overlooked and misunderstood.

Ovarian cancer that’s found early, when it’s small and has not spread, is easier to treat successfully. Ovarian cancer is sometimes found after symptoms appear, but many women with ovarian cancer have no symptoms. This is why it’s important to share your family history and any risk factors with your provider.

According to the American Cancer Society, ovarian cancer is rare in women younger than 40 and typically develops after menopause. Risk factors include:

  • Giving birth for the first time after 35 years of age and never having a full-term pregnancy
  • Having a family history of ovarian cancer, breast cancer, or colorectal cancer
  • Having a family cancer syndrome – up to 25% of ovarian cancers are a part of family cancer syndromes resulting from inherited changes (mutations) in certain genes.
  • Taking hormone therapy after menopause
  • Using fertility treatment
