Fatal I-81 Collision in Cortland County: SUV Swerves to Avoid Traffic, Kills Another Driver

On Thursday, August 15, 2024, a tragic accident on Interstate 81 in Cortland County resulted in the death of a 71-year-old driver from New Jersey. The incident is a stark reminder of the dangers of sudden traffic changes and the importance of maintaining vigilance on busy highways.

The Incident:

At approximately 1:10 PM, just past the I-81 exit to Marathon, a Honda SUV driven by a 26-year-old from the Bronx encountered stopped traffic due to ongoing construction. To avoid a collision, the driver swerved into the left lane. This evasive maneuver resulted in a crash with a Toyota vehicle, sending both vehicles off the highway.

The Aftermath:

The driver of the Toyota, a 71-year-old New Jersey resident, was tragically killed in the collision. A 70-year-old passenger in the same vehicle sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse for treatment. The SUV driver, was treated at the scene for minor injuries.

Lessons and Reminders:

  1. The importance of maintaining a safe following distance, especially in construction zones where sudden stops are more likely.
  2. The dangers of abrupt lane changes, even when trying to avoid a collision.
  3. The need for constant awareness of road conditions and potential hazards, including construction zones.
  4. The potential for chain reactions in traffic, where one vehicle's actions can have devastating consequences for others.

What to Do If You're Involved in an Accident:

  1. Check for injuries and seek immediate medical attention if necessary.
  2. Contact law enforcement to report the accident.
  3. If it's safe to do so, document the scene with photos and gather contact information from witnesses.
  4. Notify your insurance company about the incident.
  5. Consider consulting with a legal professional experienced in car accidents to understand your rights and options.

Whether you're a daily commuter or an occasional traveler, staying alert, following traffic laws, and adapting to changing road conditions can help prevent such accidents and keep our highways safer.

Remember, if you or a loved one has been involved in a car accident, don't hesitate to seek both medical and legal assistance. Your health and rights should always be the top priority.
